Comment on Batting

by Taylor Spalding

The suggestion for golfers to bat the ball is an idea that will send needles shooting under the skin of the strict formalist. The reason for the objection is plain. When the moving ball is struck the body will not be adhering to the formal correct golf positions that have been deemed holy by the practitioner of traditional golf instruction. But let me make my counterpoint.

The reason we bat the ball is for the purpose of developing the notion of the hand going to the ball. The long fats of The Golden Swing Thing™ can be looked upon as mere extensions of the hands. The golf club then too is merely an extension of a different form. Yes the ball we strike with the stick occupies a different space than does the golf ball. But the action of the strike in the sense of time is similar in both actions. They have nearly identical profiles in relation to our intent to swat at the ball.

Hitting the ball with the Swing Thing by means of a centered movement will build the "reaction sport" mentality. This is absolutely necessary in golf albeit hindered by the introduction of formalist instruction. This teaching error arises from the broad misconception by the golfer there is a benefit in the luxury of time. As we wile our way to the silent ball we fool ourselves, believing that we have time to think.
